“I hate pink”
Project Brief
“I hate pink” is something a lot of young kids including myself found themselves saying. What's really happening here is they begin to understand society’s view of femininity. Often later in life, they begin to realize that it was never about the color pink, in fact, they may love the color. They instead hate how they are treated or the things that are assumed when they express parts feminine parts of themselves.
I hoped to do was create something that helps people realize why they feel the things that they do towards femininity and tell a story that they can relate to.
How does misogyny affect society’s view of femininity?
Concepts
I began the process by The process for this started with making a mood board. I was combining visuals of journals, scrapbooks, and overall early 2000s style.
To sketch I first worked on paper and made some rough thumbnails of the cover design just to get accustomed to what the visuals would look like together. Afterwards I dove right into making a mockup, focusing on composition and flow from page to page.
Creating the Final Product
Obviously pink was a focus here. I wanted the drawings to not only be monochromatic but also feel gestural and loose, as if this is something someone may have sketched in their notebook.
Some of these spreads actually include doodles from some of my good friends. I wanted this zine to feel “lived in” and like a real person is expressing these thoughts and emotions.
